History of Snowdonia Cheese Company

The Snowdonia Cheese Company was established in 2001 with the aim of creating a luxury selection of cheeses and found immediate success at farmers’ markets. Within months its cheeses were being stocked by fine food delicatessens and grocers, and its distinctive wax-coated truckles are now widely recognized, popping up on menus and as award winners at prestigious cheese competitions.

Approach

Their cheeses are manufactured in a world class creamery supported by a number of expert suppliers with new products continuously under development. The team at Snowdonia Cheese are committed to excellence, innovation and customer service.

“North Wales is one of the UK’s wettest areas with ample green pastures and fresh sea air, making it a prime location for raising dairy cows. The Snowdonia Cheese Company was formed in Rhyl in 2001 by a group of dairy farmers in North Wales.

“Our dedicated team strive to produce consistent products, of the highest quality, and work together to guarantee the perfect texture and flavour profile that our consumers around the world expect. Our luxury cheeses are renowned for their distinctive waxes which extend their shelf life and look great. Creating new cheeses and choosing the wax colour is taken very seriously so they are given a character to match the taste.” – John Newton Jones, Managing Director of Snowdonia Cheese Company.

UK and further afield

The company takes an impassioned approach when it comes to producing their cheeses and this has helped to establish the brand in the UK and internationally. The UK Guild of Fine Foods acknowledged this hard work when they awarded them best British cheese brand in 2018.

Having established themselves as one of the leading speciality cheese brands in the UK, they grew internationally to meet demand from other countries. Through partnerships with leading importers, Snowdonia Cheeses are enjoyed in Europe, the Middle East, the US and as far afield as Australia.

John Newton Jones stated, “Our ambition and deep belief in our products continues to drive us to explore new markets and opportunities continuing our commitment to investment to meet the needs for our customers and the very high expectations of our consumers who love our products.

“Our goal is to make the Snowdonia Cheese Company a globally recognised benchmark for quality protecting the values we hold dear and creating a sustainable legacy for North Wales and the UK’s fine food industry.”

Range and Variety

Their flagship extra mature cheddar, Black Bomber is a best seller followed closely by the other varieties in their range including Beechwood, a smoked cheddar, the Red Devil with peppers and chillis, award winning vintage aged red Leicester Red Storm, and their newest addition, Nature’s Nectar, which blends smooth mature cheddar with rum-marinated figs and honey.

In 2019, Black Bomber was voted the number one Best Brand in the UK for the fourth time in five years in the Guild of Fine Foods survey. This followed a gold award for black Bomber and a silver for Red Storm at the 2018 International Cheese Awards.

We’re very proud to have worked with Snowdonia Cheese Company since the very beginning of our company and we can boast that we stock their full range of fantastic cheeses.

As if that wasn’t enough to tickle your taste buds, they’ve recently launched some very tasty chutneys to complement your cheeseboard.
