Hello! I’m Tom Pinder, founder of The Welsh Cheese Company.

Our aim is to showcase and celebrate the very best Welsh cheeses, by bringing together produce from 15 (and counting) of Wales’ finest artisan cheesemakers.

Where it all began

Like so many of us, my love of cheese can be traced back to my childhood. My family and I spent many happy days visiting a small dairy farm just down the road from our house, where the farmer and his wife produced the most mouth-wateringly sharp farmhouse Cheddar. As I grew up my tastes broadened, and during my student years I loved finding new and unusual cheeses to try in Cardiff’s delis and farmers’ markets. I was often struck by the sheer variety of local cheeses on offer – as well as their fantastic flavours!

Fast forward 15 years, and it was time to turn my passion into a business. After months of researching (read: eating cheese) and talking to (read: eating cheese with) Wales’ best artisan cheesemakers, I launched The Welsh Cheese Company in 2017.

Why Welsh cheese?

Location, location, location. From ancient coastal farmsteads to small dairies hidden in the foothills of Snowdonia, our beautiful rural landscapes make prime cheesemaking locations. Wales is well-known for its rain – and all of those showers are good news for cheese fans. Why? They’re the secret ingredient! All that rain keeps our pastures green and healthy, which leads to happy, well-fed cows (plus sheep and goats) and top-quality milk.

Despite our perfect dairy farming conditions, Welsh cheese is underrated. It’s so much more than bland, mass-produced Caerphilly and cheese on toast. From creamy soft cheeses that would rival any French brie, to punchy Cheddars and lip-smacking blues, Welsh cheesemakers are pushing boundaries with their innovative recipes and flavours while preserving traditional techniques. Here at The Welsh Cheese Company, we’ve made it our mission to spread the word.

What’s next?

We’ve gone from strength to strength since launching in 2017 and are always expanding our offering. As well as our individual truckles and wedges we also sell carefully curated gift boxes and hampers, well-balanced cheese board selections and all the necessary accompaniments, plus our ever-popular cheese wedding cakes. You can even sign up to receive a hand-picked selection of our favourite cheeses every month with a cheese subscription.

The wholesale side of the business has grown substantially alongside the website side, and in May 2022 we opened a shop in one of our units in Taffs Well, just to the north of Cardiff.
